Book Review: The Hunger Games

OW!!!

So, I was walking up the three flights of stairs up to my apartment, and I slipped on some ice, and broke my fall with my face. This broke one of my teeth, and the piece that broke off lodged in my cheek. I had to get stitches because the puncture was so deep. So i go to my dentist around the first week of january, and they tell me I have to get a root canal and a crown because there's not enough of hte tooth left to fix it. Annnnd the soonest they can get me in is the 26th... So I had to wait all month long in excruciating pain just to get in to have them do the root canal, and I still have two more appointments to finish it off. And the worst thing is that my insurance only covers 60% of the procedure, so I'm looking at a $600 pricetag on top of all the pain and the multiple dentist visits. That almost hurts more than the broken tooth haha.

Sooooooo, I've been inventing a bunch of new recipes and crap lately, because it's something I like to do, here's one of the better ones:

Garlic Cheese Rolls

3~ cups flour
1 cup water
1 cup grated cheese
1/4 cup sugar
2 Tablespoons cooking oil
2 teaspoons garlic salt
2 teaspoons yeast
1/2 teaspoon basil
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1 beaten egg

Combine water, yeast, sugar, oil, basil, oregano, garlic salt, and the egg in a mixing bowl, mix together thoroughly.

Add 1 and 1/2 cups of flour and mix it to a paste.

Add cheese and mix it in.

Add the remaining flour 1/2 cup at a time until the dough thickens to the point that it's impossible to add more to it.

Kneed the dough until it is smoothe with no unabsorbed flour in it.

PLace dough in a greased bowl with a towel or something over it and let it rise until it doubles in size.

Kneed the dough once more and break up into 12 balls of equal size.

Place the balls in a greased muffin tin and let rise again until they double in size.

Preheat oven to 375 F

Bake until the rolls are golden brown on top, place a sheet of tinfoil on top of them and bake for a further 5 mins.

The Eternal Chain Chapter 5 First Draft

I've finished chapter 5 of The Eternal Chain, which is a complete rewrite of my earlier story Beyond the Lost Horizon, and it can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

This is a reaaaaally long chapter, It's told from Kriss' point of view. This chater basically tells the backstory that explains why Raven and Kriss are running for their lives and trying to find and recruit Brand. There's really not much to say about it, except that it's a pretty large bit of exposition that fills in character motives and starts off some character relationships. I tried to fill in the back story in such a way that doesn't feel like I'm just dumping it all on you, one of the biggest mistakes a writer can make is to just dump all the info about the world and everything in a huge lump. That was one of hte biggest problems with Beyond the Lost Horizon. I think I'm doing a lot better with it this time around.

The War of Echos Chapter 2

Christmas is over, life is returning to normal, and now I finally have spare time to get back to doing what I enjoy doing: Writing. So, starting the new year off I've finished the next chapter of Spitplane Saga: The War of Echos, and it can be found at the bottom of this page.

The prologue of this book begins things off with a mysterious traveler telling a story. The second chapter takes place on Shard, introducing the major characters in that world, and the conflicts that they face. This chapter introduces Echo, the sister world of Shard. Where Shard is technologically advanced, Echo is not, relying on magic rather than technology. It's more of an obvious fantasy setting, and it is the world in which most of the series will take place after the first book. This chapter is from the point of view of a relatively minor character and it takes place seventeen years before the previous chapter. Most of the chapters dealing with Echo will be flashbacks until about the 2/3 mark of the story. Echo has a lot of back story and politics that need to be told and worked through to build things up, and in Shard, all of the back story was easily told in one chapter. The interesting story with Echo is in the past, but the interesting story in Shard is in the present. So I've put conveniant little headers on all of the chapters that tell what world they're taking place in and when to keep it from getting confusing.

Anyway, chapter two is told through the eyes of King Gollahar, and like I said, he's a relatively minor character, but at that time in the story the main character of the Echo storyline was a newborn. I wanted to give an introduction to Echo, Echoria, Rosengarten, and some of the beliefs of the people, while also showing that Aara is a bit of a miracle child, and to do all of that, I had to go back to a time before she is a viable viewpoint character and show it all through the eyes of a minor character, etc.

Book Review: Codex Alera Book 1: The Furies of Calderon

Got a few books for christmas, and Codex Alera book 1: The Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher is the first I've had the time to read through since, so check out my review on it =). Butcher wrote the much more popular Dresden Files, if the name sounds familliar.

These three words sound alike, but are completely different in meaning. Using the wrong one makes you look like a retard. It completely baffles me that anyone who has grown up speaking English could ever posibly NOT know the difference between them.

There - A place.
They're - A contraction of the words They and Are.
Their - A possessive plural pronoun implying that a group has ownership over something.

Stop getting it wrong people, it's not rocket science!!!
